| Extra withholding is any additional tax withheld each pay period (for form W4) or periodic payment (for form W4P). Providing an extra withholding amount will reduce the amount of the paycheck/payment and will either increase a refund or reduce any amount of owed tax. In the U.S., this is the value that appears on Step 4c) of a W4 or W4P form. |
